Until 1872, the location of this house was occupied by the gardens of The St Laurent convent, a Benedictine community of women. Today, the area is home to the Apartments Residences of the Abbey. The house is conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from the Bourges Cathedral. During the revolution, the grounds were sold, and Mr. Alphonse-Joseph Charmeil, an art teacher at the Royal Middle School of Bourges and founder of the Bourges Museum, which he served as curator for nearly 50 years, built this unique house in the style of Napoleon III. In 1878, he also added a charming pavilion and two detached houses to the garden.
